Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 3rd of August 2017

Case name: 2017_08_03-AEG297
Situation: 37 people including 11 children reached the Greek island of Samos
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Aegean Sea

Summary of the Case: On Thursday the 3rd of August 2017 at 4.30am, a contact person forwarded the GPS coordinates of a boat on its way to the Greek island of Samos to us. At 4.45am, we learned that there were 37 people on the boat, including 11 children. We also received their phone number and tried to reach the travellers. At 5.54am, we were able to talk to them, they were calm and their boat was still moving in the direction of Samos. At 5.10am, we called the Greek coastguard in Piraeus and were told that they had already approached the boat, but that the travellers were not in distress and intended to continue their journey. Still, at 5.16am, we also sent an email to the Greek coastguard and the UNHCR, in order to provide them with the boats GPS position and phone number in written form. Afterwards, we were not able to get in contact with the travellers again, but two days later, the contact person informed us that they had safely reached the Greek island of Samos.

  • Border police patrols

While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33). Data source: interviews with border police officials.
  • Coastal radars

Approximate radar beam range covered by coastal radars operating in the frame of national marine traffic monitoring systems. The actual beam depends from several different parameters (including the type of object to be detected). Data source: Finmeccanica.
  • Exclusive Economic Zone

Maritime area beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea in which the coastal state exercises sovereign rights for the purposes of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources, whether living or non-living, the seabed and its subsoil and the superjacent waters. Its breadth is 200 nautical miles from the straight baselines from which the territorial sea is measured (UNCLOS, Arts. 55, 56 and 57). • Frontex operations

Frontex has, in the past few years, carried out several sea operations at the maritime borders of the EU. The blue shapes indicate the approximate extend of these operations. Data source: Migreurop Altas.
