Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 2nd of August 2016

Case name: 2016_08_02-AEG260
Situation: People stranded on island in the Evros river
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Aegean Sea

Summary of the Cases:On Tuesday the 2nd of August 2016 at 9 am, the Alarm Phone was alerted by a contact person to a case of travellers stranded on an island in the Evros river. The travellers stranded on the island after the engine of their boat had stopped working. Amongst the travellers was a boy with cancer in a very bad condition, according to the travellers. We informed the Greek police about the group, but they told us that the travellers should call 100 or 112 themselves. We decided to write an email to UNHCR Greece in order to inform them about the group and to prevent a possible pushback. At around 1.30 pm our contact person informed us that he had lost contact to the travellers. Later we learned through the support group Team Humanity that the boy suffering from cancer was hospitalised and given medicine. Later, the travellers, including the boy, were brought to the Police Stations. We didn't receive further information, but it is likely that the they were put into a closed camp.
