Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 20 January 2024

Case name: 2024_01_20 - Eastern Med - 31
Situation: 120/145 people rescued to Cyprus
Status of WTM Investigation: closed
Place of Incident: Eastern Med

Summary of the Case:

During the evening of the 20th of January, relatives informed Alarm Phone to a boat in distress in Eastern Mediterranean. There were more than 120 people on the boat, that departed from Syria. At 22:09 we established contact with them, but the communication was difficult. At 01:56, we managed to get a GPS-position. We also learnt that there was no drinkable water onboard and that there were 17 children who were in a bad condition. At 02:15 CET, we alerted the authorities in Cyprus about the distress via email and phone. We were not able to contact again the boat. Early morning, at 6:49, we called JRCC Larnaca for the second time: the officer told us that they were able to find the boat, 2nm away from the position we had sent, and were bringing the people to shore. The next days, we tried to confirm that the people were rescued safely to Cyprus. On January 22 in the morning, the families confirmed that their children had arrived to the camp.

Maritime area beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea in which the coastal state exercises sovereign rights for the purposes of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources, whether living or non-living, the seabed and its subsoil and the superjacent waters. Its breadth is 200 nautical miles from the straight baselines from which the territorial sea is measured (UNCLOS, Arts. 55, 56 and 57).
