Summary of the case: On Monday the 26th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 38 travellers, including women and children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Garabouli the previous evening on a white fiberglass boat. Communication was difficult due to poor connection, but they told that they were almost out of fuel. Through their relative we managed to receive their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We continued passing on positions from the relative and the travellers as often as possible. The travellers told us that water was entering their boat and that the waves around them were high. Later, we learned that they had been rescued by the NGO vessel Life Support.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
