Summary of the case: On Thursday the 1st of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 47 travellers, including a child, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sfax in the evening of the 29th of July. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers and did not know their exact GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We were never able to reach the travellers or find out from the authorities what happened to the boat. In the end we had to close the case without knowing the fate of the travellers. They were likely intercepted by the Tunisian coastguard, but we were not able to verify this.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
