Summary of the case: On Saturday the 27th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 35 travellers, including two women and several minors, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers told us that their engine had broken, that water was entering the boat, that they had no more drinking water left and that three people on board were very sick. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and passed on their updated position to the authorities. Later, we lost contact to the travellers. An empty boat matching the description we had received was found in the area, indicating that the travellers were rescued by the Italian coastguard. However, we were never able to reach the travellers to confirm this, and the Italian coastguard refused to provide us with any information.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
