Situation: 50 travellers in distress in the Central Med, intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Monday the 17th of June 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 50 travellers, including three women, one of them pregnant, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Al Khoms, Libya, on a grey and black rubber boat. They told us that some people onboard were sick and that they had no more food and drinking water left. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and passed on updates to the authorities as often as possible. We could tell from the calls that their situation was deteriorating as time passed. Later, we learned that the travellers had been intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.
