Summary of the case: On Sunday the 9th of June 2024 just before midnight, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 50 travellers, including two women and two men, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They were travelling in a black rubber boat. They told us that they had no drinking water left and that they were out of fuel, leaving the boat drifting. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that the travellers had been intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
