Summary of the case: On Friday the 7th of June 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 109 travellers, including 10 women and two children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sabratha, Libya, on a rubber boat. They told us that their engine had a problem and that the weather conditions were very bad. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and passed on their updated positions to the authorities as often as we could. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Geo Barents.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
