Summary of the case: On Monday the 27th of May 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 80 travellers, including 6 children and 20 women, one of them pregnant, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They were travelling on a grey and black rubber boat. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and passed on their updated position to the authorities. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Humanity 1.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
