Summary of the Case:
In the morning of the 18th of January, Alarm Phone was contacted by a worried relative, alerting us to a group of 30 adults and 12 children in distress at sea near the Greek island of Samos. The relative sent us a GPS position and told us that the Hellenic Coast Guard (HCG) had intercepted them, taking their engine and throwing it in the sea. We contacted the group but had some translation difficulties. At 10:11 CET we called the MRCC in Ankara, who told us bout two boats that they had found around Samos. Shortly after this, the relative reached out to us again to tell us that the group had been found by the Turkish Coast Guard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
