Summary of the Case:
During the night of the 17th January, Alarm Phone was alerted by a relative to a group of 38 people (including 8 men, 10 women and 20 children) in distress on a boat between Lesvos and the Turkish mainland. We were informed that they had been pushed back by the Hellenic Coast Guard. This information was later confirmed by the Turkish Coast Guard who informed us that they had found this group. This was another illegal pushback, where people were once again prevented from exercising their right to asylum in Europe.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
