Summary of the case: On Thursday the 21st of March 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 28 travellers, including four children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Nabeul, Tunisia, on a rubber boat. They told us that their engine had broken and that water was entering the boat. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned from a relative that the travellers had been rescued and brought to Sicily.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
