Summary of the case: On Saturday the 28th of September 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 59 travellers, including three women, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Akhfenir in the early morning of the 27th of September on a blue rubber boat. We did not manage to get their GPS position but immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. We later learned from the relative that the travellers had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Lanzarote.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
