Summary of the case: On Saturday the 28th of September 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of travellers in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Tan Tan on the 22nd of September. We had very little information about the boat and were not able to reach the travellers. However, we immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned from the relative that the travellers had most likely been intercepted by the Moroccan navy. As we had very little information about the boat, it was not possible for us to confirm this information with the Moroccan rescue authorities.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
