Summary of the case: On Friday the 27th of September 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 49 travellers, including one woman and one baby, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Tan Tan in the evening of the 25th of September on a black rubber boat. We were not able to establish direct contact to the boat and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned from the relative that the travellers had been intercepted by the Moroccan navy.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
