Summary of the Case: On the 30st of November, the Alarmphone shift team was alerted by a relative to a boat of 47 travellers that had left from Tan Tan, Morocco at around 2.00 am local time on the 29th of November. The relative informed that there were 47 people on the boat, among which there were 8 women. Even though the Alarmphone shift team didn’t manage to reach the travellers at first and therefore didn’t have a GPS position of the boat, all the other information were immediately forwarded to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. Only a few hours later, a direct contact to the people on the boat could be established and they reported to have been intercepted by the Moroccan Marine Royale.

In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
