Summary of the Case: On the 10th of October, just before midnight, the Alarm Phone shift team got alerted to a group in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The group of 57 people, including 12 women and 4 children, had left Dakhla, Western Sahara, on the 09th of October in a rubber boat. The shift team reached the group during the night and learned about their situation and position – and alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. In the morning, Salvamento Maritimo informed the shift team that the boat had been rescued and brought to the Canary Islands.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
