Summary of the Case:

In the early evening of the 5th of January, Alarm Phone received a call by a concerned relative, alerting us to a group of 38 people in distress in Greek waters, near Lesvos. The caller informed us that the people on the boat were afraid and asking for help, and that Greek coast guard was already with the boat and had told the people that they would be taken to a camp. We tried to establish direct contact to the boat but we could not. We alerted the authorities at 22:18 CET. Then we unfortunately learned by the relatives that the Greek coast guard has pushed back the boat to Turkish waters. Turkish coast guard confirmed that all the 38 people were taken back to Türkiye, and that everybody was safe.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
