Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 8th May 2023

Case name: 2023_05_08-WM029

Situation: 9 travellers in distress in the Strait of Gibraltar, picked up by the Moroccan navy and brought back to Tangier.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean Sea

Summary of the case: On Monday the 8th of May 2023, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of nine travellers, including two women, in distress in the Strait of Gibraltar. The travellers had left the same morning at around 07.00 CEST from Tangier. We managed to reach the travellers, who told us that water was entering their boat and that they were in urgent distress. We also got their GPS position. We then immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo as well as the Moroccan rescue authorities. Shortly after, the Moroccan authorities informed us that they had found and picked up the travellers and that they would be taken back to Tangier.
