Case name: 2023_02_04-ATL006

Situation: 51 people in distress in the Atlantic Ocean rescued by Salvamento Maritimo to Gran Canaria

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Atlantic Ocean

Summary of the Case:In the evening of Saturday the 4th of February 2023 the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 51 travelers, including 9 women in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travelers had left from Boujdour, Morocco in the night from 2nd to 3rd February 2023. We were not able to establish a direct contact to the travelers. We relayed all the information we had to the Spanish Search and Rescue organization Salvamento Maritimo via E-Mail. When calling Salvamento Maritimo around midnight the officer confirmed that they were aware of this case and are searching for them. We continued to try to reach the travelers, which we were not able to. The next day around midday (5th of February) we called Salvamento Maritimo again. They informed us about two ongoing rescue operations, but we were not able to learn if this boat was part of one of them. In the late afternoon we called Salvamento Maritimo again and they confirmed that one rescue operation launched probably is about the group of 51 travelers. Later on around 21:00 CET we learned from different Spanish authorities that the rescue operation of 51 people, including 9 women has been successful and that they were rescued to Gran Canaria. We informed the relative.
