Summary of the Case:

In the morning hours of 28th of November 2022 our team was alerted by relatives stating that a group of 37 people had been pushed back to Turkish waters south east of Lesvos. They provided a location. At 9:55 CET we alerted the Turkish coastguard. At 10:15 CET the Turkish coastguard called back to confirm they had found the 37 people at the location provided by us. They stated that the people had been obviously pushed back to this position.

Unfortunately we could not establish a direct contact to the people so we could not get more details about what had happened.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
