Case name: 2022_11_25_Eastern Med_1066
Situation: Injured man pushed back from Greece near Kyriaki
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Landborder Turkey-Greece
Summary of the Case:

On 25th of November we were alerted by relatives to an injured man who had crossed the land border from Turkey to Greece. He was close to a road west of Kyriaki in the district of Soufli. They reported that his leg was broken. We managed to get in direct contact with the person and at 14:25 CET we sent an email to alert Greek authorities, expressing his wish to apply for asylum.

We also called several police and border guard stations by phone (Soufli, Metaxades, Mikro Dereio) and at 15:04 CET an officer of the police station in Soufli confirmed that he would contact police stations in Mikro Dereio to urge them to assist the injured man. In all later calls they pretended not to know about the case.

The next day, 26th of November at 16:12 CET the relatives informed us that the man was arrested by the Greek police and returned to Turkey: “He was transferred to a hospital in Turkey because of his poor health condition. Everything was taken from him before he was returned to Turkey.”

We tried to get in touch with him again to speak about what happened, but could not manage to reestablish the contact with him.
