Summary of the Case:

Around 1am in the morning, CEST, we receive an urgent alert about a boat in distress that is about to sink. The location showed the boat was in Turkish waters. We immediately inform the Turkish Coast Guard about the distress. At 2 CEST, a relative tells us that the Turkish Coast Guard had arrived on scene. The people were brought back to Turkey. Some days later, the case is also reported on the homepage of the Turkish Coast Guard – it states that 29 people were pushed back by Greek assets into Turkish waters.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
