Case name: 2022_08_31-WM047

Situation: 27 travellers in distress in the Western Med, intercepted by the Moroccan navy.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean Sea

Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 31st of August 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a boat in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. Onboard were 27 travellers, including eight women and three children. The travellers had left from Tangier and were heading towards Tarifa on a black rubber boat. We were not able to reach the travellers directly, but alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the distress situation, relaying all the information we had. The following day we learned that the Moroccan navy had intercepted a boat matching the description we had been given. We later reached the travellers, who were all back in Morocco.
