Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 10th August 2022Case name: 2022_08_10-ATL079
Situation: 64 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Ocean, intercepted by the Moroccan navy.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Ocean
Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 10th of August 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 64 travellers, 49 men and 15 women, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from between Laayoune and Boujdour the previous evening on a grey rubber boat. We were not able to reach the travellers as they did not have a satellite phone with them, but we immediately informed the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. Early the next morning, the travellers called us directly. They were adrift close to the West Saharan coast. They told us they could see a fishing vessel in the distance, but we did not manage to get their GPS position. We called the Moroccan rescue authorities and informed them that the travellers were close to Morocco. After this, we were no longer able to reach the travellers. In the afternoon, the relative told us that the travellers had been intercepted by the Moroccan navy; this was later confirmed by the Moroccan rescue authorities.
