Summary of the case: On Sunday the 8th of May 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 18 travellers in distress in the Alboran Sea. The travellers had left from Al Hoceima the previous morning at around 11 CEST on a green polyester boat. We were not able to reach the travellers, but immediately relayed the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. At 08.20 CEST Salvamento Maritimo informed us that they had rescued the travellers who were all safely onboard their vessel and that they were bringing them to Motril.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
