Situation: 2 people in distress at the Greek-Turkish landborder - one person died

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Eastern Med

Summary of the Case:

In the evening of July 15, Alarm Phone was alerted by a relative about 2 peoole who were in distress in the Evros region. They initially were together with a friend who died along the journey. We alerted the Hellenic Border Police at 00:10 CEST with the request to go on a search for the deceased and to recover the body from the forest, enabling repatriation to it's family if the family should wish so. At 12:15 the next day, we were informed by the officer on duty of the Didymoteicho Police Station that they have found the two people and brought them to Fylakio Camp. They refused to give any additional information about the body. Several days later one of the people told us that the body of the dead person was transferred to Turkey and buried there.
