Situation: A man with a serious heart condition, alone and in need of urgent medical attention, in the Evros border region.

Summary of the Case: At 21:10 in the evening of the 29th of June 2022, Alarm Phone was alerted by an old man with a serious heart problem who needed urgent medical attention. Alarm Phone immediately informed the authorities. Following the first call, we were unable to make contact with the man again. The local police station informed us on 30th June that they conducted a search during the night of the 29th but did not find him. Alarm Phone also contacted the local hospitals on the 30th June to make them aware of the situation. We were unable to make contact again, and do not know what happened to the man.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
