Summary of the Case: On Wednesday the 25th of May 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of nine travellers in distress, stranded on land in the Evros region. One of the people in the group was ill and was unable to continue walking. The travellers had already called the emergency number by themselves, and in addition we alerted Greek authorities to their situation. During the night, we lost contact to the travellers. Later, we found out that they had been returned to Turkey.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
