Summary of the Case: On Monday the 23rd of May 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 28 travellers, including seven children, in distress north of Samos. The travellers had been pushed back by the Greek coastguard four hours earlier. The relative told us that one of the girls on board had health issues. We were never able to establish direct contact to the travellers as their phone had been stolen by the Greek coastguard, but alerted the Turkish coastguard to the distress situation. They confirmed that they would initiate a search and rescue operation. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the Turkish coastguard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
