Summary of the Case: In the early hours of the 15th of May 2022, Alarm Phone received a call by a worried relative, alerting us to a group of 9 people including women and 2 children in distress in a sinking boat. We managed to establish contact to the people on the boat who told us that they had no fuel, their motor was broken and they urgently needed help in the Greek SAR. We alerted the Greek authorities at 03:35, who said they would rescue the boat if they found it. Two hours later we received news that another boat approached the travellers, removed their engine, took their phones and went away. All night we called the Greek Coast Guard, but they denied any contact with the travellers, then at 05:30 we received a new GPS position of the travellers in Turkish SAR, and that they were crying and very afraid after this push-back. We alerted the Turkish Coast Guard, then at 08:15 they confirmed rescue to Marmaris.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
