Summary of the Case: In the early morning of the 29th of April 2022, Alarm Phone was called by a concerned relative alerting us to a group of 22 people in distress who had departed from the Turkish coast, had made it to Greek territorial waters, but then had been attacked by masked men on their boat. We tried to establish direct contact to the travellers but were unable to get through. We alerted the Greek authorities at 05:25, who said they did not have any information. Then later that day we received confirmation from the Turkish Coast Guard that they had picked up a boat coming from Rhodes, and told us that there have been a lot of push-backs from Greece recently.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
