Summary of the case: On Monday the 14th of February 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team received a direct call from a group of 18 travellers, 16 men and two women of which one was pregnant, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zuwarah the previous day on a wooden boat. The travellers had no life jackets and their boat was unseaworthy. We managed to get the travellers GPS position and immediately alerted all relevant authorities to the distress situation. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the search and rescue NGO vessel Ocean Viking and that they were all safe.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
