Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean

Summary: On Sunday the 16th of January 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team received a direct call from three travellers in distress in the Strait of Gibraltar. The travellers told us that they had left from Casablanca six hours earlier on a kayak, heading towards Tarifa. We managed to get the GPS position of the travellers and alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. We stayed in contact with the travellers and at 01.00 CET the following morning they told us that they could see the rescue asset of Salvamento Maritimo approaching them. Half an hour later, the travellers confirmed to us that they had been rescued and were being taken to Spain.
