Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 17th December 2021

Case name: 2021_12_17-WM810

Situation: 37 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Gran Canaria.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea.

Summary: On Friday the 17th of December 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 37 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from between Dakhla and Boujdour the previous morning, heading towards the Canary Islands on a rubber boat. We were not able to reach the travellers directly, but forwarded all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. Because of the high number of boats in the Atlantic during those days, Salvamento Maritimo was not able to confirm the rescue of the travellers. The following evening, however, the relative confirmed that the travellers had been rescued and brought to Gran Canaria.
