Case name: 2021_12_12-WM804

Situation: Three travellers in distress in the Strait of Gibraltar, intercepted and brought back to Morocco.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean

Summary: On Sunday the 12th of December 2021 in the early morning, the Alarm Phone shift team received a direct call from three travellers in distress in the Strait of Gibraltar. The travellers had left from Tangier the day before in a black kayak without a motor, intending to row across the Strait. They told us that water was entering their boat. We immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the distress of the travellers. When we called the travellers back half an hour later, they told us that they were being intercepted by the Moroccan navy.
