Summary of Case: In the evening of November 4th we were called by several relatives worried for their family members who had departed Dakhla in a white wooden boat more than five days prior and had since been without news. We alerted authorities to the missing 33 men on the Atlantic route at 21.15 CET. We were unable to establish direct contact to the missing people. At 00.40 CEST November 5th the Spanish Search and Rescue organisation Salvamento Marítimo informed us of the rescue of a boat matching the information the relatives had provided to Gran Canaria. At 08.24 CEST the same day, relatives who had alerted us to the missing boat confirmed the arrival of the group.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
