Summary of the case: On Thursday the 23rd of December 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of around 75 travellers, including nine women and nine children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers hef left the same morning at 01.00 CET from Al Khums. We managed to get the GPS position of the boat and immediately alerted all relevant authorities to the distress of the travellers.

As we were not able to obtain any information from the Italian or Maltese coastguard, the following morning we called the so-called Libyan coastguard. They confirmed that they had intercepted a boat corresponding to our description in a position close to the latest coordinates we had received from the travellers.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
