Summary of the case: On Sunday the 21st of November 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of around 115 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Abu Kammash at around 02.00 CET the same morning on a blue wooden boat. The travellers told us that the waves were high and that water was entering their boat. We managed to get their GPS position and alerted all relevant rescue authorities to the distress situation. The following day we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Sea Watch 4, operated by the German NGO Sea Watch.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
