Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 23rd October 2021Case name: 2021_10_23-CM604
Situation: Around 65 travellers in distress in the Central Med, probably intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Saturday the 23rd of October 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 65 travellers, including many women and children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sabratha, Libya, on a blue wooden boat. We were not able to reach the travellers, but the relative sent us a position that they had gotten from the travellers at 04.35 CEST that morning. We immediately alerted all relevant rescue authorities, forwarding all information we had. In the evening, the so-called Libyan coastguard told us that they had intercepted three boats that day, including a boat matching the description we had been given. Probably the travellers were intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard, which would be the reason that we never managed to reach their satellite phone.
