Situation: 2 vessels intercepted by the Moroccan Navy
Status of WTM Investigations: Concluded
Place of Incidents: Western Mediterranean Sea, Morocco
Summary of the Cases: On Wednesday the 26th of August 2015, at approximately 5.08am, the Alarm Phone was contacted by someone who alerted us to a vessel in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. He informed us about a vessel carrying 9 people, including 2 women and 2 children.
At around the same time, the Alarm Phone was contacted directly from a boat in distress between Morocco and Spain. There were also 9 people on board and they had left at around midnight. They told our shift team that the travellers were ill and they were struggling with high waves. We quickly informed the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo and informed them about both cases. Afterwards, the people from vessel 2 could not be reached anymore.
At approximately 6.30am, Salvamento Maritimo informed us that both vessels had been intercepted by the Moroccan Navy.
