Situation: Boat with 34 travellers in distress between Morocco and Spain intercepted and brought back to Morocco.

Summary: On Sunday the 22nd of August 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team received a direct call from a boat in distress in on its way from the north of Morocco to Spain. The 34 travellers onboard told us that they had left from Morocco the previous night.We were not able to figure out the exact location of the travellers, and after our initial phone call we were not able to reach the travellers again while they were at sea. Only later did we find out that they had been intercepted and brought back to Morocco.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
