Summary of Case In the night of August 16th a boat carrying five children, 12 women and 16 men called us, asking for urgent assistance as they were in a distress situation. They had departed TanTan on August 11th. We passed the information provided to us by people in distress to authorities at 00.22 CEST. At 01.52 CEST people on the boat called, relating a woman on board was in labour, giving birth. The boat had run out of fuel and weather conditions were worsening. In the morning of August 15th we received confirmation the 33 people had been intercepted to Tarfaya by the Moroccan marine.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
