Summary of Case In the evening of August 11th we were called by a group of 12 women, three children and 47 men in distress on a black and white boat who had departed Laayoune for the Canary Islands. We alerted authorities at 20.25 CEST. The Spanish Search and Rescue organisation Salvamento Marítimo (SM) Las Palmas informed us at 20.40 CEST they were starting a SAR mission by plane. We were unable to re-establish contact to the boat in distress throughout the night. At 08.50 CEST the following morning, August 12th SM Las Palmas confirmed the rescue of 62 people in a black and white boat to Fuerteventura.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
