Summary of Case In the evening of August 15th Alarmphone was called by a relative who alerted us to a distress case of 186 people who had departed Abu Kammash in a blue wooden boat. We forwarded the information available to authorities at 18.22 CEST. We were unable to establish direct contact to the boat but were forwarded updated GPS positions by the relative. At 20.50 CEST we were informed that the rescue vessel Geo Barents had arrived on scene and found the people in distress.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
