Summary of Case In the evening of August 12th we received a call from a wooden boat in distress carrying 100 people in international waters. They forwarded their GPS position and we alerted authorities at 19.08 CEST. People in distress continued relaying updated GPS positions which we forwarded to authorities. At 08.10 CEST August 13th the Marine Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Tunis confirmed the rescue from Sea and interception to Tunisia of 103 people in a wooden boat in the area of the distress case.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
