Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 21st of July 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a boat in distress in the Central Med carrying around 100 travellers. The relative gave us a position, showing that they were very close to the Italian search and rescue zone. We tried several times to call the satellite phone number of the travellers but were never able to establish direct contact to the boat.
At 03.17 CEST we sent an email alerting the Italian coastguard to the boat, forwarding all information we had. We could never again reach the relative nor the boat, but we learned that a boat which could match the information we had arrived the same morning.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
