Summary of Case In the evening of June 14th Alarmphone was alerted to a group of 23 travellers in a fiberglass boat in distress in the Maltese SAR zone. The relative who informed us of the distress case said the boat was out of fuel and drifting. We informed authorities at 18.37 CEST. We called the boat throughout the night but were never able to get in direct touch with the people in distress. In the morning of June 15th the relative who had alerted us to the case informed us the people had arrived in Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
