Situation: Nine women, six children and 60 men in distress intercepted by so-called Lybian Coast Guard
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of Case
In the morning of June 14th Alarmphone received a distress call from a group of nine women, six children and 60 men drifting in a rubber boat with broken engine and no life vests in international waters. We alerted authorities at 10.39 CEST. At 16.45 CEST people on the boat called, informing us of a large boat they could see. It was the merchant vessel Valcadore, which was aware of the distress case but informed us they were not going to assist the people unless Maltese or Italian authorities ordered them to do so. An hour later we lost contact to the people in distress. So-called Lybian Coast Guards did not respond to our calls. In the afternoon of June 15th a relative of people on the boat informed us the group had been intercepted to Lybia.
